Hybrid Yarns

I Found these prototypes from 2008. I made them for the Furniture Fair in Milan,  hybrid yarns in a woven structure. I will use them to visualise thermoplastic behaviour in the Textile material science courses.

Spinning session BorĂ¥s

Back in Sweden and back to work. Started with a long day spinning session exhausted by travel and jetlag. However, working with the fibres, new combinations of webs and new yarns was so fun. Anders from the textile museum assisted us and we were able to make some new hybrid yarns. From the craft processes in Indonesia to industrial processes in Sweden.

Kuching Day 15

Grande Finale. Last day of conference, last lectures, last day with the view from 12th floor, time to say goodbye and also time to try to organise and pack everything in my backpack. The journey has come to and end and I am longing home to my family, to my work and the fresh Swedish air. And of course, unlimited resources of cheese and yoghurt. I will miss the irresistible Indonesia; so charming, coarse and honest. Still with so many genuine places where tourists never show up. And of course, a rich textile tradition from the cottons growing wild in the villages to the final beautiful weaves and batik. The conference was finalised in Sarawak handicraft Village (Borneo’s “Skansen”) with dinner and some dance.

Kuching Day 14

The same procedures as last days; run, shower, breakfast, lectures and lunch. Predictable, safe, clean and always surrounded by wealthy delegates and tourists, rather boring. I decided to go somewhere else, an area different from the city like surrounding at Hilton so I picked the boat to the other side of Sarawak and there was definitely another part of Kuching. Other religion, simpler houses and a lot more litter. No wonder the hotel porter at Hilton told me there was nothing to see on the other side of the river. For me there was a lot to see on the other side of Kuching. The night was free so we went out for dinner at an Indian restaurant, tasty food with fresh fruitjuice, I was really happy with our choice of restaurant.

Kuching Day 13

I decided to choose another path for the morning run, towards the park I did not find yesterday afternoon. This morning I went the right way and I found the park where I could run for half an hour, sweating in the hot and humid air. I felt dutiful when I spent the morning listening to all lectures that are far from my own practice and I even visited the workshop after, however I did not take part practically.  I did some work in the lounge, the only place I could get WiFi and then I went to the pool. This night we went to the Gala Dinner and Fashion Show. We were served food “the Chinese way” with shared plates on the middle of the table. The fashion show was, long, 22 different collections. The best one was from China, a collection in Brown and Black with mud impregnated fabrics.

Kuching Day 12

KUCHING DAY 12

This morning I ran for the first time during this travel, it was like healing to run along the river, sweaty and warm. With such a high humidity there is no wonder why Kuching is so green and it took some while before there was an idea to shower afterwards. I got my lovely yoghurt and big slices of cheese and fruit for breakfast, and I decided to wait one more day to have bread for breakfast so I could slowly go back to continental food again. The lectures today were about natural day and I got to know of different approaches in that area. I spent the afternoon in the executive lounge at 12th floor working. At five I want out for a walk and something to eat. The city was so different to the cities in Indonesia, somehow cleaner and with a more Chinese style. I tried to find a park I saw on the map but I found a soccer arena and there was a match going on. I sat there for a while watching the game and some boys playing soccer outside the arena.

Kuching Day 11

KUCHING DAY 11

Woke up and put the curtains away to see the fantastic view of Sarawak and the beautiful walk along the river. We had really ended up in something totally different, a clean green big city, in a room with a view, bathrobe, iron, desk and a luxury bathroom. And for breakfast I could have both yoghurt and cheese, so good for my stomach and my mind. We had our lecture today, as number two of the conference. Quite challenging to speak about art and technology for an audience mostly familiar with craft but we did it our way and though it was quite a new subject it somehow changed the mind of natural colour could be. We had lunch together with Jenny and Lina (from Sweden!) and the we went to a shibori workshop. In the night we went to the opening of a new exhibition of Sumba Ikat. Afterwards the organiser served a buffet with a variety of different Asian and Indian food. It was a relief to end the night in the air conditioned room at Hilton and finally go to bed after a long day.
